Today’s reading turns the spotlight on Shel Silverstein, a poet who has never met a warning he could not turn into a punchline. We are reading Jimmy Jet and His TV Set, Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out, Pancake?, and Recipe for a Hippopotamus Sandwich — four poems that share a common trick: push a small, ordinary stubbornness (too much television, too much garbage, too much fuss over a pancake) until it becomes something enormous and absurd.

I shaped this episode around a “What Happens If You Don’t Stop?” arc — following each character’s small refusal out to its ridiculous, cautionary end, and hearing how Silverstein’s rhyme and rhythm make even a mountain of garbage feel like a nursery song.

Before recording, I made a small index-card collage — a tall stack of pancakes rendered in brown and yellow, set in my handmade red-and-black frame. It is a direct nod to Pancake?, and it set the tone for a reading that is meant to be read out loud, with big voices and bigger laughs.
